Journal Club Wiki of the ETH Institute for Astronomy

Once every few weeks PhD Students and Advisors get together to discuss selected papers in Astro-Cosmology, to discuss together specific astro-cosmology topics, etc. Everybody in the ETH and Zurich Astro Community is very welcome to join!

The topic of this semester is: Gravitational Lensing!

  1) Introduction to lensing

  2) Strong lensing

  3) Weak lensing

  4) Micro lensing

Location: ETH HIT J43.1

The third session takes place on Wednesday, 26th of August, 4 pm!

The schedule can also be found here.

Here is the latest doodle poll.

Format:

All students read some introductory material and are requested to post to this JC wikipage at least one question.

The posting should be done one week before the JC, at least.

After the posting from the students, the advisors will put themselves some questions about fundamental concepts. Every student, after reading the material, must be  able to answer to those questions.

For each JC meeting three "experts" among the PhD students will lead the discussion (see schedule below); in particular the will have to look at the posted questions and prepare a presentation which, in a coherent and well structured way, will answer to the questions. They should also make sure that there is a balance between the theoretical and observational aspects of the topic: People should not only learn the mathematical formalisms but also understand the relevant observational applications. One of the three expert is (possibly in a round-robin fashion) the chair of the discussion.

There will be a summary of the meeting, that is a text of a few pages summarizing the discussion and the answers to the questions. This small essay will be posted on the wikipage. The report will be written by three other students (the experts should nevertheless help with the  extra material, if needed), see schedule below.
